Construction

Phase 1 of the Wild Mile was installed in 2021, and opened to the public in 2022. Phase 2 was completed over the summer of 2024, and added an additional 300 linear feet to the existing 400.

The construction process begins by installing the anchors and the docks. This is a fairly standard process used for marinas, and is subcontracted. Then, it’s time to install the floating wetlands. Pontoon modules comprise the basis of the wetlands. The ones we use are supplied by Biomatrix Water, a company based in Scotland. The modules come as rectangles or triangles, and can be bolted together at the corners with metal flanges to form a larger wetland design. Once constructed, we cover the module in landscaping fabric and planting substrate, such as LECA or wood chips. Finally, we’re ready to plant! We secure our seedling plants from nurseries like Possibility Place, Spence, Prairie Moon, Taylor Creek, Woody Warehouse, Pizzo & Associates, and others which specialize in plants native to the Chicago region.

Other features can be added to the Wild Mile, and are usually added after these preliminary construction steps are completed. Most recently, we’ve installed submerged habitats, tree baskets, and a number of furniture pieces.

In 2024, we installed Phase 2 of the Wild Mile! Enjoy some pictures from throughout the process!
